KRRA Twosome Run 5k

Course Overview

The race course is unchanged from any previous years it was held at Winston Churchill Public School. It might be a good idea to provide a brief overview of the race course.

A video of the course from the 2011 race is available here - click on the map below for a more detailed view:

The first km of the race as seen from Earl Street

The course has been measured and should prove to be a fair, safe, and hopefully fast course that we think you will like. There are no true hills to speak of, but most of the course is run on either a gentle upgrade or downgrade.

Earl Street outside the Queen's Centre

Some portions of the course, especially Earl and Sydenham Streets in the first 1.5 km will have some uneven pavement.

"Old Stones of Kingston" on Earl Street

Once through the Queen's area, you'll go slightly downhill past West Street and some of Kingston's more historic houses and B&B's (aka the "Old Stones of Kingston") on Earl and Sydenham Streets. Turn right on Sydenham Street from Earl.

Sydenham Street approaching the Cricket Field

More turns - left on West Street and you'll begin to loop around Kingston's Cricket Field, though I've never seen cricket being played there - especially in February! A right turn onto Bagot Street and you'll pass an outdoor hockey rink on your left. With luck there's a pickup game going on. Have you ever run a race past an outdoor hockey game before?

Barrie St, Cricket Field and Frontenac County Courthouse

A right turn onto Barrie Street takes you slightly uphill and past the 2 km mark. At this point, notice the baseball backstop and diamond in the Cricket Field to your right. The late Charlie Pester was one of Kingston's greatest athletes. They say in a game here at the Cricket Field he once hit a ball over the road and into the water fountain in front of the Frontenac County Courthouse. Think about that as you run by and try not to trip over your jaw.

Union Street - back through the Queen's campus

The third kilometre takes you left on Union street and again through the Queen's campus and you may notice a bit of an uphill grade through here. You'll continue west on Union to the 3 km mark at Collingwood Street. Kilometre number 4 will be tough as you fight the grade, fatigue and the fact that you must turn right (and uphill) on College instead of continuing straight to the old finish line at the Correctional College.

Fork in the road on College Street

At College and Hill Streets, you begin your last kilometre. Take the left fork onto Churchill Crescent and circumnavigate the "island" block at the end of Earl Street. At the north end of this block (where it meets up again with College Street), you can begin a nice downhill finishing kick to the finish line.

College and Earl - three blocks to go!

In no time, you have a sweeping left turn back onto Earl Street and it's only three blocks back to the school. All that remains is a right turn and a finishing sprint (?) down MacDonnell Street to the finish line.

The finishing stretch on MacDonnell Street

Now back into the school for some cold water, hot coffee and a well-earned snack. And maybe even a team award!

See you on the course!
